Whilst this isn't about me… so that you can determine if you would like me to help to define and create your own version of success, it is only fair that I share a little of my background. I come from what you might call a humble, loving family with origins in Ireland & Scotland. Raised in the UK and for a while in Libya, I was fortunate to be exposed to diverse cultures and attitudes. My education truly blossomed when I left school, my curiosity and energy led me to practical, first hand experience within commercial enterprises. I encountered both the vagaries of entrepreneurial zeal, and the machinations of small, medium and large size organisations. I have travelled extensively and have spent a considerable amount of time in North Africa, Northern Europe and latterly Southern Europe. I am said by my peers to be relatable, empathetic, creative, tenacious, brave, caring and a good communicator at all levels. It is also said that I do not suffer fools gladly, and have a child like inquisitiveness and intuitive wisdom. I would add that I possess an innate desire for justice and equality and a passion to help others reduce and overcome fear and pain. I am also, and by no means least a proud & loving Son and Dad…
When we truly reflect we see that it is ‘as much the negative as it is the positive experiences that determine our character and how we interact with others’ this in turn leads to how we conduct our affairs. Consequently I am mindful of all of my life’s experiences that have led me to where I am now. As for my professional experience, my perspective has been forged through careers in Software, Finance, Property and Wellbeing. My commercial experience is diverse having created, negotiated, sold, lost and re-made multi million GBP£ / US$ projects. I have delivered sales and contracts with Global Brands. Perhaps less grand but nonetheless wholly enjoyable and enlightening, I have been involved in inventions, start ups, SME’s, Charitable engagements and other challenging projects. My journey has moulded my global perspective during which time I have experienced the exhilaration and despair of great highs and but equally of chastening lows. No matter whatever the low (professional or personal), I have always bounced back. Like most of us, I have lost many loved ones, some far too young, and lost love for reasons never to be resolved but accepted. Yes, I know how acute this pain is. Near death experiences through unforeseen poor health, mis-spent youthful heroics and 3rd party influence have all had their moment - but all said and done, I would not change a single thing…
Earlier on I mentioned an entrepreneurial zeal. As some are born natural athletes or have an individual passion to paint or write, this was and is my burden to bear! I’ve always been motivated to achieve, to prove myself, to be number one. Upon reflection, I recognise that initially my own version of success was measured by material wealth & excess, which even at the time often felt empty and full of ego. Of course who wouldn’t wish to be secure, comfortable, fed & watered, dressed in quality clothes wearing an aspirational watch and driving a head turning car? But in honesty I found it to be vacuous, I was simply doing what was expected of someone who has achieved, but why did I feel so empty? It wasn't until I experienced the benefits of Yoga / Meditation that I started to develop the essence of grounding, compassion and service. These teachings naturally opened up the realisation that I need none of the material trappings to be happy and more so, very little to be content. Previously my success would be a Property portfolio, Travelling the World on an expensive ticket & Champagne. Today I am happy and content in nature, by the ocean, practising my Yoga, trying to surf and drinking a nice cup of tea or a glass of pure mountain water. It is very freeing to not need praise from anyone nor the chasing of a social label… rather a daily endeavour to find the middle way and balance…
